ToothCosmetic and general dentistry procedures frequently overlap as the technology and dental procedures used to treat everything from cavities to tooth loss becomes more sophisticated and modern. This is good news, especially considering that over 90% of Americans will develop at least one cavity in their lifetime according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If you are like most people, you probably don't want a mouthful of silver when you smile, laugh, or open wide to take a bite of your favorite food. Tooth-colored fillings are the perfect solution to this common problem. Dr. Jay Shartzer, your implant dentist in Fort Myers, FL, offers these restorations to his patients—read on to learn how they can benefit you!

General and Dentistry from our Fort Myers Office

Tooth-colored dental fillings are made from a material known as composite resin, a combination of plastic, ceramic, and glass designed to match the texture and color of a natural tooth. As one might expect, the most obvious benefit of tooth/enamel colored fillings is that they blend in and look completely natural, making it so that no one except you and the dentist will ever have to know that you have been treated for cavities.

However, there are other benefits to go along with the cosmetic advantages of tooth-colored fillings. For instance, given that the composite resin material used in clear fillings bonds easily to the surface of the tooth, clear fillings typically preserve more of the natural tooth material than metallic (amalgam) fillings in most cases. Additionally, composite resin fillings are durable and fracture resistant, carrying an average life span of five to seven years, although they can last much longer in many cases. Small to moderate sized cavities can usually be filled in one appointment depending on the situation.
